Customers message you on WhatsApp from morning to night. Half the questions are the same: “Is this in stock?”, “What’s the price?”, “When do you open?”. Each one pulls you out of work for thirty seconds, and multiplied over a week that’s real money lost.
A WhatsApp bot answers those instantly. But the way you build it matters — the wrong choice gets your number banned or costs you hundreds a month.
The three routes
1. Official WhatsApp Business API — the safe, paid route
Run by Meta through providers like Twilio, 360dialog, or WATI.
- What you get: reliability, no ban risk, automation for free-text replies, and multi-agent inbox
- What it costs: roughly $10–60/month for the provider, plus per-message fees (often $0.005–0.05)
- Who it’s for: businesses that already get meaningful volume, or that plan to scale
2. Third-party gateway (WhatsApp Web-based) — the cheap, gray zone
Services like WATI-lite tiers, or self-hosted tools that connect through WhatsApp Web sessions.
- What you get: fast setup, cheap (sometimes free at low volume)
- What it costs: $0–15/month, but you are technically violating WhatsApp’s automation ToS — numbers get banned periodically, and you’ll re-connect sessions now and then
- Who it’s for: side hustles and tiny shops testing the waters, accepting some downtime
3. Direct code with a webhook — the DIY route
You register for the official API (via a provider) and write simple logic: receive webhook → parse intent → send reply.
from flask import Flask, request
import requests
app = Flask(__name__)
@app.post("/webhook")
def webhook():
msg = request.json["entry"][0]["changes"][0]["value"]["messages"][0]
text = msg.get("text", {}).get("body", "").lower()
reply = "Harga mulai Rp10.000. Mau saya bantu yang lain?"
if "stock" in text:
reply = "Semua varian ready. Klik untuk order."
# send reply via your gateway's API
return "ok", 200
- What you get: total control, cheapest at scale, no per-message platform fees beyond the gateway
- What it costs: a small VPS (US$5/month) plus your developer time
- Who it’s for: businesses with a person who can maintain a script
Which one for an Indonesian small business?
- Under ~50 customer messages a day: route 3 with a gateway is fine; expect occasional reconnects
- 50–500 messages a day, or if the number is your sales lifeline: route 1, the official API — the monthly cost is worth not losing your number
- Start now with zero budget: WhatsApp Business app’s built-in quick replies, then upgrade when it hurts
Three rules before you automate
- Never auto-reply to new conversations from a cold number — that’s a fast ban
- Keep a human handover keyword (
/agent) in every reply - Log everything — when the bot misbehaves, you need the record
Automation should make you reachable, not replace you. Pick the route that matches your volume and your risk tolerance.
